We were at the Gene Autry Music Festival in Gene Autry, Oklahoma, in October of 2004. There were some fantastic western singers to hear. I had the opportunity to be on the stage and visit with Janet McBride, John Ingram, and Kata Hay among other great performers. There was this big tall cowboy, Gary Hart, who sang a neat song called “My Flag.” Gary wrote the music to the lyrics written by Bud Boyer. Bud wrote the song inspired by the patriotism of his wife Mary. |
My Nan and I talked with Gary and Bud and told them how much we liked the song. That afternoon Gary came out to these steps and taught me the song. That night, back at the motel I practiced and practiced the song. |
The next morning I asked Gary if I could sing the song for him and Bud. When it was my turn, we got on the small stage together and I performed the song for the first time. I think Gary, Bud, and Mary really liked it. |
That afternoon we had time on the main stage and Gary and I performed together as I sang the song. The audience loved it and we got a great standing ovation. Here we are setting up to sing “My Flag.” |
